It is great news for the Cancer Society Otago and Southland Division to have been confirmed as the beneficiary charity for the Great Gatsby Casino night that will be held on Wednesday 7 February 2018 in the Games Village.
The Cancer Society does a great job supporting local people who have been diagnosed with cancer and families who are affected by a cancer diagnosis. They run Health Promotion programmes to reduce the risk of people getting cancer and they fund the largest non-government cancer research programme in New Zealand.
Chris Green, Marketing and Communications Manager for the Cancer Society who is based in Dunedin says “We are delighted to be able partner with the Otago Community Trust New Zealand Master Games and be part of a week of events that are iconic for Dunedin and so important to the local community. We know that while cancer can affect anyone, it is more prevalent as people get older so the opportunity to promote our free support services and presence by being associated with the New Zealand Masters Games Dunedin fits really well”.
All money raised at the Great Gatsby Casino night will stay in our community to support local people who need assistance due to the impact of cancer. “The evening promises to be lots of fun and we will definitely be there!” Mark says.
Fit enough, smart enough, strategic enough or just plain good and have won a medal?

The team were pleased to be able to showcase the 2016 New Zealand Masters Games last weekend in the Wall Street Mall, Dunedin.
As people flooded into town for the Santa Parade, we put the public to the challenge - who could row 200m the fastest? The rowing competition highlighted how easy it was to compete in the newly added event for the Games, Indoor Triathlon (30min distance trial, consisting of 10min rower, 10min cycle, 10min treadmill).
It was great to see so many people jumping on the rower and put their heart and soul into their own personal bests.
Congratulations to our winners Chrissie Short and Tyler Veitman who gave it their all and each won a free registration for the Games.

Out and About: Christchurch & Queenstown
Christchurch - Canterbury A&P Show We were super lucky that we picked to be inside for this event, as we had many seasons over the 3 days of the Canterbury A&P Show.
The Rowing Machine in the NZMG tent proved to be a popular hit for the 10,000+ visitors to the Show, with free registrations up for grabs for the top 3 people who could row 200m the fastest. The two fastest times were: 1st Jim Wellacott 31.9 sec, 2nd William Hutson 34.8 sec, and 3rd was an unnamed man who works for DOC but disappeared before we could get his name - Mr DOC's time was 34.9 sec.

Queenstown Marathon We were lucky again with the weather in Queenstown for the Air New Zealand Queenstown International Marathon – this time we were outside and crossing our fingers and toes that Metservice would have an inaccurate weather reading – lucky for us they were wrong, and we had to peel our Merino layers off during the day and apply sunscreen as the temperature soared into the 20’s.
With over 9,000 runners travelling from 99 countries around the world, our marketing here was invaluable, and we offloaded a lot of promotional material to interested athletes.
We again had a Rowing Machine, and Ben was our winner with the fastest time of 45 seconds, in a different challenge to Christchurch. Ben was visiting from Australia, and took part in the World Vintage Rugby Champs in Queenstown during the week, followed by running the half marathon on the Saturday – crazy! We look forward to seeing Ben as he makes the trip across the ditch for the 2016 New Zealand Masters Games.
