2014 Netball Sport Fee Update
 Netball Sport Fee Reduced
The Dunedin Netball Centre wishes to announce that the registration fee for Netball has been reduced following feedback from potential competitors that the fee was too high.
The fee, set by the Dunedin Netball Centre, had risen from $25 per team member in 2012 to $75 in 2014.
Chair of Dunedin Netball Centre, Jono Bredin, says “The registration fee had not risen since 2010 and given the major change in the economic environment over the last six years, unfortunately DNC has had to revisit its budgets and pricing. In saying this, DNC appreciates the comments received regarding the concern in increase in the sport fee for Netball for the 2014 event and after considering various options, has reforecast its budget. The DNC is pleased to advise that it will still be able to bring you an exceptional event at a cost of $50 per person.”
Dunedin Netball Centre and the New Zealand Masters Games are both committed to delivering a high quality, professional and successful event as has always been the case in the past. |
2014 Rarotonga Holiday Winner
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Megan Coleman from Kenmure, Dunedin in winning the trip to Rarotonga. Megan was terrribly excited when Kirsten from Travel Associates rang her last night with the news of her win. The trip is for two to spend 5 nights in a Premium Garden Suite at Pacific Resort Rarotonga (courtesy of Pacific Resort Hotel Group) and includes return airfares and five nights accommodation.

 In honour of our 25th anniversary year, we will be celebrating in style!
The 2014 New Zealand Masters Games dress theme will be:

We encourage you to have some fun and get involved both at the games and the village. We are fairly certain there will be some combination of robots, divas from the silver screen, princes and princesses, winning medals and cutting shapes on the dance floor. With an abundance of choices, use your imagination, get creative and embrace yourself for one week to remember. It’s your time to shine!

The Games team love to get out and about!
Congratulations to the Caversham Harrier and Athletic Club and all the competitors who took part in the 35th Cadbury Dunedin Marathon, it was another successful event!
Over 2000 enthusiastic and colourful runners made their tracks over the course, and we made sure we were there to share it.

Masters Games Launch Rolls in the ‘New’
In Dunedin at the official launch tonight of the 2014 Southern Trust New Zealand Masters Games, ‘new’ was the operative word. The 2014 Games will have a new line-up of Games Ambassadors; rugby mentor, Tony Gilbert and synchronised swimmers, Lisa and Nina Daniels. The Southern Trust has become the new sponsor of the Games, and new Games Manager, Vicki Kestila is introducing a swag of new sports to the country’s largest multi sport event.
Games Ambassador, Tony Gilbert, who has played a leading role in the development and promotion of Rugby in Otago and New Zealand, says he’s a fan of the Masters Games and is looking forward to being involved.
'What a terrific opportunity these Masters Games provide us to continue exploring long-held interests, re-connecting with sports we enjoyed in the past and maybe trying something we have always wanted to have a go at. I know there will also be ample opportunity for everyone to sample the delights of my favourite city, Dunedin. I can't wait to be part of it.”
Dunedin sisters, Lisa and Nina Daniels have been New Zealand’s most successful synchronised swimming duet in international competition. They’ve been Oceania Champions three times, won Bronze at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games and represented New Zealand at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Lisa says she and Nina thoroughly endorse the spirit of the Games.
“They are a great way of bringing people together to participate in sport. It encourages them to give all types of sport a go no matter what age or ability and provides a supportive environment for competition. From our past experiences in multi-sporting events such as this, we know long lasting friendships will be made. We are looking forward to meeting everyone and sharing many great experiences and successes.”
The 2014 programme offers 70 sporting events. Games Manager, Vicki Kestila says this includes some very competitive events which are new to the Games.
“We’ve got Top Team – based on the popular ‘Top Town’ television programme from some years ago. It’s a fantastic team event. Tough Master is a 'mud sweat and tears' obstacle challenge for those who like a bit of grubby activity and Ultimate is a team disc sport competition.
“We are also adding Rugby Tens. It’s less fast paced than Sevens, and leads to fewer injuries than 15-a-side, so has more attraction for older players. Nonetheless, it is pretty exciting to play, and to watch. I think it will be a real hit with spectators. Dodgeball also lines up for the first time.”
The age criteria for competitors at the Games varies according to each sport but in general is usually 30yrs and over. While many participants are very competitive, level of experience is not so important, as Vicki says, “The spirit of the Games is all about taking part and having a go.”
The launch, held at Toitu Settlers Museum, marks the opening of registration for the Games. Games Chairman and Dunedin City Councillor John Bezett, says that more than 6000 competitors are expected to take part.

New Zealand Masters Games returns to the University Union Dunedin (Friday 14 June) – The New Zealand Masters Games is returning to the University Union as its Games base in 2014. The Otago Community Trust Games Village will be located at the University of Otago Union after an absence in 2012 due to the refurbishment of the Union buildings. Games Manager, Vicki Kestila is thrilled to have confirmed the Village for the 2014 New Zealand Masters Games, as it means planning and preparation for the event can now be confirmed. Mrs Kestila said “It’s really exciting to have the Games Village return to the University Union. This has always been a very popular venue with participants and with the refurbishments that have been made, I think we are all in for a great time.” Chairman of the Dunedin NZ Masters Games Trust, Mr John Bezett said, “I am delighted that the University Union will be supporting our Games and the newly upgraded facilities at the Union will provide our competitors with the very best of facilities.” The New Zealand Masters Games are held alternate years in Wanganui and Dunedin with the 2014 NZ Masters Games in Dunedin from 1 to 9 February. Mrs Kestila was appointed in October 2012 so the 2014 NZ Masters Games will be her first as Games Manager. The NZ Masters Games is a multi-sport event that offers participants an opportunity to compete and partake in a range of sporting and social activities. The Masters Games philosophy is one of participation with competition being important but not all-important. Entry is open to all, irrespective of ability or skill and without requirement to be registered as a member of a sporting organisation. I was sitting on the side line in 1992 supporting my friends playing netball, I wasn’t quite old enough to play but I was taking it all in, cheering along my friends. I loved the game, the atmosphere and I thought to myself this is just my element right here! The Village was set up at Logan Park in large tents; some will remember the pallets put down because of the flooding from the rain.
In 1993, the team set off again all in matching tracksuits they loaded up on a plane ready to take off to Wanganui. I later joined them again as a supporter of my club. I remember the motto of the games being Fun, Friendship and Frivolity and exactly that it was! I met a bunch of guys and girls up there from Wellington and made an ever-lasting friendship with them. In fact in 2005 we joined together and played in the same team.
Thankfully, I hit the age limit in 1994 and this is when I began to play. Twenty years on and I have had so much fun playing Netball, Indoor Netball, Volleyball and Badminton travelling between Wanganui and Dunedin. The Village is always the perfect place to go along, have a laugh and make new friends. It is here at the Masters Games Village that I have made these connections with people I have things in common with and still to this day keep in regular contact with. Having people from all over the country come to Dunedin means I have had the opportunity to show them around our city, our attractions and promote Dunedin as a beautiful place to come with wonderful people and beautiful scenery. We are very lucky to have great sporting facilities such as Moana pool, Edgar Sports Centre, Caledonian and now the Forsyth Barr stadium.
I am not what you would call an athlete but have amazing friends and team mates who took me on board the journey to win these medals I hold today. There were times in hard fought battles in the finals where we had to pull extra time from our bags to get right through to the end. These have been amazing times and even at our level the pressure of winning is great enough to bring tears to your eyes.
I am so glad to be a part of such a caring close team and carry a lifetime of memories from the Masters Games. This year I am volunteering in the Dunedin games and getting a feel for all the background work that goes into this event. It simply amazes me!

2014 Launch and TV News Tonight

Launch
The official launch was held last night at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum. Attended by over 120 guests including Dunedin City mayor Dave Cull, Games Ambassadors Tony Gilbert, Lisa Daniels and Nina Daniels. The launch was a great kick start to the opening of registrations and the build up to the Games in February 2014.
News
 TV crew arrived at the Games Office this morning to find out a bit more about the Games. The story airs tonight on Freeview, Channel 39 Dunedin Television - 5.30pm, 7.00pm and 9.30pm.

2014 Interislander Quiz Night Winners

2014 Fishing - Salt Water
 Fishing is one of the 70 sports on offer for the 2014 New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin. The competition commences on Sunday 2nd February 2014. Separate events are held for men & women including, Salmon (Boat & Land), Barracoutta, Shark, Groper, Blue Cod, & Trumpeter Fishing. Weigh in @ the Tautuku Fishing Club, Smaills Beach,Tomahawk, Dunedin. Sports Fee $35 per person. For your reading pleasure, we've included a copy of Lure, the latest newsletter from Tuatuku Fishing Club, hosts of the fishing event for the Games. I would like to pass on my congratulations and thanks to the organisers and volunteers of The Southern Trust New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin recently.
From the helpful and efficient registration service to the event management and awarding of medals ceremony, the relevant people deserve a big thumbs-up. It is also wonderful there is a "certificate of participation" that you can obtain/print off by visiting the games website. I only competed in one event but was proud to win a medal.
The 5km run around Bayfield Park lagoon was lovely, and the atmosphere was inspiring with supporters cheering participants on.
Having competed a the North Island Masters Games and the World Masters Games, I would say the Dunedin 5km games event would now be one of my favourites. The last time I competed in Dunedin was in 1987 at a university cross country event, thus I have a sentimental soft-spot for Dunedin.

2014 Paddlesports
New Zealand Masters Games: Thursday 6th February 2014

 The hills and streets of Dunedin resonate to the sound of people pounding it out on foot and bike. The Otago Harbour sits in the middle of this scene inviting people to give their arms a run on kayaks or stand up paddleboards.
The history of kayaking goes back 4000 years to the Eskimos of the Artic and North Atlantic oceans. They were developed to be rolled while hunting seal and other sea creatures.
Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is thought to be a new discipline but 3000 years ago Peruvian fishermen were using a small weed-woven craft, paddled standing by a long bamboo shaft shaped like a single kayak paddle.
The history of New Zealand Masters Games kayaking goes back to the first games in Dunedin in 1992, while SUP only made its debut in 2012.

The health benefits of paddling include:
- Improved cardiovascular fitness
- Improved core strength and flexibility from the rotation of the paddle
- No need to go to a gym as your shoulders, arms and chest will testify
- Minimal wear and tear on joints as a low impact sport (water is forgiving!)
- You get to smile a lot , and you can chose between peaceful and meditative or exhilarating
- Enjoyment of our many different water ways

Water Cooled Sports, Portsmouth Drive, (near the teeth) has a ramp where you can try these activities. They hire, sell and give lessons. You can purchase a kayak/paddle from around $1000 and a SUP/paddle etc. from $1500. The Otago Canoe and Kayak Club are situated at the Boat Harbour near the Forsyth Barr Stadium.
We would love to see new people at our New Zealand Masters Games event on Waitangi Day, Thursday 6th February 2014. Come and paddle our magnificent harbour & maybe win yourself a medal in one of our many age groups. |

2014 Suzuki Mystery Escape Winner
Congratulations to Mary Ann Bishop, not only a winner of quite a few medals at the NZ Masters Games, but also the winner of Suzuki's Fun Photo Competition.
Looks like she had plenty of fun and a whole lot of support from her two granddaughters (pictured below) and grandson who took the photo.
